Floyd Mayweather Jr- is a former pound for pound king in boxing. He was on the top of the league from 2005 to 2008. During his time Manny Pacquiao was rank #2 , but Floyd retired and Pacquiao took the seat. Floyd announced his return to the boxing businees and added some more excitement to the Game. He was supposed to fight on July but an injury on his rib cage delayed the fight and was moved on September 19, 2009 against Juan Manuel Marquez (current rank #2 Pound for Pound).
Mayweather is known for his defensive style, this make the opponent wary that they become careless not knowing when Floyd will attack. One of the fight’s Mayweather was really effective was against Arturo Gatti, Floyd showed his defensive strategy and was able to attack when Gatti was exhausted (some say Mayweather did an illegal punch while Gatti was talking to the referee).
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a perfect professional record (39 -0 – 25 KO’s) but a lot of people criticized him because they say that he chooses or he handpicked his opponents and always choose a smaller guy. When Floyd was still in lightweight he was the guy who would challenge anyone. The most notable fight was against Diego Corrales, they were both on their prime neither of them had a loss nor had been knocked down. The fight was one sided in favor of Mayweather, he knocked Corrales down 3 times in round 7 and 2 times in round 10. That event made Floyd a name in the Boxing Rankings.
Pretty Boy- is the nickname he got during his amateur years because of his defensive skills, he rarely get scars or bruises during his fight.
Money Mayweather- is now what they call him because of the multimillion contracts he signs on his last 2 fights.
The last 2 fights of Mayweather were blockbuster because of the names of his opponents. Oscar De La Hoya is a boxing icon, almost everyone in the world watch him whenever he fights. De La Hoya – Mayweather match made PPV history buys for a boxing match with 2.4 million record, the highest ever in boxing. Mayweather won the match via split decision. The Hatton – Mayweather match was also a blockbuster because of the followers of Ricky Hatton from the United Kingdom. The match was entitled Undefeated because both fighters have a perfect record. Hatton suffered his first lost, he was knocked out on the 10th round making Mayweather still undefeated.
Mayweather also had an issue with the WWE wrestler The Big Show. Floyd interfered in a wrestling match to help Rey Mysterio from The Big Show’s chokeslam. He tried to punch Big Show several times which resulted to a broken nose. Big Show then challenged Floyd in a wrestling match on WrestleMania 24. Mayweather won the match by punching Big Show when he was about to receive a chokeslam. Mayweather received a big payday on that event. It also helped to boost his popularity.
Floyd Mayweather is now back in action, and prepares to fight Juan Manuel Marquez. If ever he wins this fight, he could make a blockbuster fight against Pacquiao. We will find out then on who’s the real pound for pound king…….
